Visit the cemetery of ships in the former coastal town Muynak, drive along the bottom of the Aral Sea, where today the Aralkum desert has formed, and spend the night in a yurt.

Since 1960 numerous irrigation canals were built throughout Central Asia to promote agriculture. The water from the rivers was largely diverted and used to irrigate the fields. As a result, less and less water reached the Aral Sea.

Itinerary
The tour takes place all year round. The best season: the second part of May, August, the first part of September.
Day 1
Drive from Nukus to Muynak (210 km, 3h). Visit the ship graveyard and museum dedicated to the Aral Sea in Muynak city. Lunch in the house of the Karakalpak family. Continue to drive across the dried bottom of the Aral Sea. The distance from Muynak to today’s shore is 150 km (4 hours’ drive). Drive on the edge of the plateau Ustyurt. Photo stop on the Grand Canyon. Arrive at the Aral Sea, where you can take a walk along the shore. It is optional to swim in the lake. Overnight stay in a yurt.

Day 2
Early wake up in order to take some pictures of the sunrise. After breakfast, drive back to Nukus by a different route. Visit the Kurgancha-Kala fortress (13th cent) and nomad cemetery. Stop in the village of Komsomolsk to taste fresh camel milk. Stop at Lake Sudochie, which is one of the places of birds’ migration. In addition to flamingos, there are around 230 species of nesting birds, which can be observed at the lake in different seasons, including 12 globally threatened and 3 nationally threatened. Climb the hill, which was used as a lighthouse. Continue the drive to fishermen’s village “Urga”. Lunch at a local café in Kungrad. Visit the archaeological complex of the 14th century Mizdakhan and the ruins of Gyaur-Kala. Arrive at Nukus at around 17.00.
